“My favorite queer film – one that I feel really showcases queer love – is FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. Of course there are so many others, but in terms of romance I find it really captures the beauty of a butch/femme relationship. Although the movie never confirms that Idgie and Ruth are actually lovers, the two characters epitomize the butch/femme relationship in my mind. The way they walked in the world and how they interacted with each other was very telling. Idgie never conformed to the idea that she should be a “lady” and Ruth never apologized for being a “lady.” The love and respect they had for each other reminds me of my own relationships with the women in my life. It was like each woman could see the other’s soul. To me it’s the ultimate date movie, and it is hands down the best example of what it feels like when you first fall in love with a woman.”
