Boy Culture on PRIVATE ROMEO In an item entitled, “My Own Private Romeo” the Boy Culture blog reports:
I’ve been told that Alan Brown’s
Private Romeo will wind up being considered “one
of the best gay films of the year”—and it’s playing at Frameline 35 in San
Francisco as we speak. It stars War Horse‘s Seth Numrich and is
described as follows: “When eight cadets are left behind at an isolated military
high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom
and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of Romeo and
Juliet, YouTube videos, and lip-synched Indie rock music, Private Romeo
takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have
inspired.”

NEW: Kickstarter Showcase
In case you haven’t heard of it yet, Kickstarter is just one of many new
online resources which helps filmmakers raise the money they need to complete
their films. Welcome to our new section showcasing some of the latest LGBT film
projects on Kickstarter! Here are two interesting LGBT film projects that are
currently seeking funding:
No Look Pass is the coming-of-age American Dream story of
Emily ‘Etay’ Tay, a first generation Burmese immigrant from Chinatown, Los
Angeles. Despite the fact that girls don’t play sports in the Burmese
tradition, Etay miraculously becomes a nationally-ranked basketball star at
Harvard University thanks to her patented move, the no look pass. But Emily is
caught between two worlds and feels tormented by her double life. She strives
to play professionally in Germany but her dreams are no slam dunk — sexuality,
family, race, and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell conspire against her, firing her passions
on and off the court.

Mr. Angel chronicles the extraordinary life of transgender
advocate, educator and porn pioneer, Buck Angel. His in-your-face style of
activism has audiences challenged and outraged by his insistence that he is
simply “a man who happens to have a vagina.” Buck has spent a lifetime facing
relentless opposition and yet lives his truth with no apology. This
feature-length documentary explores the source of his unwavering message of self
acceptance and his drive to publicly confront the male/female binary head on.
This is a story of amazing perseverance, empowerment, and an unlikely hero.

And a Note from BROTHER TO BROTHER Director Rodney Evans We are 3 weeks away from shooting on THE HAPPY SAD!! We are now trying to
raise the final $6k to make sure we have enough funds to make it through
production with all of our essential costs covered (ie insurance, equipment,
food, minimum SAG fees for the actors). Although the kickstarter campaign has
ended it is still possible to make fully tax-deductible donations to the project
through our 501c-3 fiscal sponsor, THIRD WORLD NEWSREEL, via this link:
http://www.nycharities.org/donate/c_donate.asp?CharityCode=2026
Write “for THE HAPPY SAD film project” in the additional options section. If
mailed checks are preferred they can be made payable to Third World Newsreel,
with “For The Happy Sad project” in the memo section and sent to the address
below:

TWN will send a donor thank you letter which acknowledges your tax deductible
donation. Our casting director, Susan Shopmaker (HEDWIG, SHORTBUS) is helping us
find some amazingly talented actors that I am very excited to begin working
with! We will finalize the cast next week. We have started a facebook page for
the movie so feel free to “like” us. We’ll have production stills and updates
posted there during the shoot. Here is the link:

Feel free to forward this note to anyone that you think might be interested
in helping us get closer to completion. Brief project info is pasted below.
Thanks again for all your generosity and support. This movie is only getting
made because of the contributions made by each and every one of you! -Rodney
THE HAPPY SAD is a feature-length narrative film that
follows two couples, one black and one white, whose lives collide as they
navigate open relationships and sexual identity. A short video and additional
project info on the kickstarter page:

THE VIP Q MOVIE PICK:
|
Where we ask today's hottest queer
and queer-friendly filmmakers, stars and community leaders to answer the
question:
One of my favorite LGBT movies is... |
 |
Erika Randall-Beahme (co-director, LEADING LADIES)
“THE
INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURE OF 2 GIRLS IN LOVE it is! I remember the countdown
til this film came out. I remember the charge I felt waiting in line and then
sitting in a theatre, a real, public theatre, waiting for the darkness to wash
over the me, ready to lose myself in this love story... but more I remember loving
being there in the light with all those other women just before it started,
finding myself in a story about my own life, a story that was so new and
unexpected. Teenage queer girls need these stories–and this film is, to me, part
of the world that inspired
LEADING LADIES. Also, as a bisexual woman, CHASING
AMY was/is really important to me. Choosing someone out of “100% of the
population” has long been my mantra and was a revelation to me at the time. Plus
I thought Joey Lauren Adams and her weird little voice were
wicked hot.”
Erika’s wonderful new film,
LEADING LADIES is
available for pre-book now from WolfeVideo.com and hits the streets on
September 13th at fine retailers everywhere. Erika is pictured above with
husband Daniel Beahme at the recent premiere of the film at

Poison 20th Anniversary Edition
The classic of the New Queer Cinema finally comes to DVD in a handsome 20th
Anniversary special edition. From the Oscar®-nominated director of Far from
Heaven, I’m Not There and the new HBO mini-series Mildred
Pierce, this controversial masterpiece is a thrilling work of immense
visual invention. Inspired by the writings of Jean Genet, Poison deftly
interweaves a trio of transgressive tales—“Hero,” “Horror” and “Homo”—that build
toward a devastating climax. “Hero,” shot in a mock tabloid-TV style, tells a
bizarre story of suburban patricide and a miraculous flight from justice;
“Horror,” filmed like a delirious ’50s B-movie melodrama, is a gothic tale of a
mad sex experiment which unleashes a disfiguring plague; while “Homo” explores
the obsessive sexual relationship between two prison inmates.
