“One of my favorite LGBT films is a lesbian film written and directed by a straight man: LIANNA by John Sayles (restored by UCLA Film and Television Archive). The stark realism of domestic life, the early ’80s drab academic East Coast setting, and the depiction of a lesbian bar even scarier than in real life might be too dated and disturbing for some viewers, but this is a film I never grow tired of watching. It’s a great middle-age coming out story that demonstrates the power of good filmmaking and a specific story told well. I hate to dance, but I love dance scenes in movies and the “Women of the World” sequence is one of my favorites. It’s absolutely hilarious (perhaps not intentionally) and hands down, the best part of the movie to watch with friends. Why is it that straight men have made some of the best lesbian movies? (To be fair, I would have picked Angelina Maccarone‘s ALLES WIRD GUT (EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE) if it were available on DVD).”
