“My favorite LGBT film is SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY which had an enormous impact on me as a young filmmaker. I had always admired Schlesinger for his incredible control and the dynamic, under-the-skin performances he pulled from his actors, but the deftness with which he handled the gay theme (or subtheme) in SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY was truly breathtaking. The “Kiss” between Peter Finch and Murray Head was, at the same time, so matter of fact and so shocking in 1971 that the New York audience that I saw it with actually gasped. It was a revolutionary act by Schlesinger and the actors and was taken as such by the public. In today’s times, it may be difficult for someone to imagine how incredibly brave they were to do it. I remember saying to myself ‘Wow! Thank you, Mr. Schlesinger. We all owe you one.’”
