Jennie Livingston (director, PARIS IS BURNING)
“One of my favorite LGBT movies is MYSTERIOUS SKIN, which I saw at the Turin Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in glamorous (although, the Italians wouldn’t agree, it’s a town famous for Fiat factories!) Turin, Italy. After dinner with John Waters and other festival attendees, we all tromped over to the theater. I thought it was a John Waters screening, but it turned out to be Gregg Araki‘s MYSTERIOUS SKIN. What a beautiful, brilliant movie: it’s almost delicate in its treatment of small-town alternakids from Kansas and their grappling with memories of childhood sexual abuse. Based on a novel by Scott Heim. Great soundtrack too. Run, don’t walk.
