From Beyonce’s creative team!

Featuring music by Beyonce music director Kim Burse, and choreography by Beyonce dance master, Frank Gatson Jr.,this exuberant musical directed by Sheldon Larry was inspired by the “vogueing” sensation featured in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, and is an ode to the wild, funky and heart-aching life of this underground subculture.

Thrown out of his home by his dysfunctional mother, Brad (Ephraim Sykes) steals her car and travels into Los Angeles where, through a chance encounter, he stumbles into a noisy raucous, chaotic event and meets the ragtag members of the struggling House of Eminence. Initially only looking for a place to sleep (and perhaps someone to sleep with), Brad ends up engaging with the colorful members of the house led by the indomitable house mother Queef Latina (Barbie-Q), herself an aging ball-legend and the fierce protectrice of her family. Laughter, tears, sex sirens, and butch queens up in pumps ensue and remarkably, Brad ends up finding an extraordinary home and loving, caring family in this, the strangest of places.

DVD Wolfe Price: $17.96 Available: June 05, 2012

Synopsis:

While the LGBT community has long had to struggle with stereotyping by outsiders, gay men also have to deal with widely held perceptions from their peers that they’re supposed to fit a certain image — men who are stylish, carefully groomed, trim and to a certain degree effeminate. But not all gay men fit this profile, and this has led in part to the rise of “Bears” — gay men who are stocky, hirsute, outwardly masculine and proud of it.

As gay culture has moved closer to the mainstream, Bears have come out of the closet (or the woods) and become one of the more visible and active subcultures within the LGBT community. Filmmaker Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Drawing Flies), a self-identified Bear, offers a look at the lives of big guys who love other big guys in the documentary!Bear Nation, which includes interviews with musician Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) and filmmaker Kevin Smith (the latter has become a Bear icon despite being married and straight).

“I love movies that have complex stuff going on! For instance, my own film KAWA, isn’t just about being gay, it also crunches on other stuff like being Maori and married with kids. So one of my favourite LGBT films is LATTER DAYS because while its a hot love story, it involves religion in the mix and you can’t get much crunchier than that. A lot gets worse in the film before things get better.”

Look for Witi’s new film, KAWA on DVD and digital May 8th from Wolfe. Check out the film’s trailer below!

“Even [Shakespeare] himself would spring for a ticket to Alan Brown’s Private Romeo, an earnest experiment in don’t-ask-don’t-tell drama as indebted to shirtlessness as to iambic pentameter.” — The New York Times

Set in a modern day military school, this smash hit gay adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet features hot Broadway “War Horse” actors Matt Doyle and Seth Numrich as the star-crossed lovers. An innovative must-see gay film!

When eight male cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, YouTube videos, and lip-synched indie rock music, PRIVATE ROMEO takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired.

From out lesbian director Celine Sciamma (Water Lilies), Tomboy tells the story of 10-year-old Laure (played by the amazing Zoe Heran) who moves to the suburbs and decides to pass as a boy amongst the pack of neighborhood kids. As “Mikael” she catches the attention of leader of the pack Lisa, who becomes smitten with her. At home with her parents and younger sister Jeanne, she is Laure; while hanging out with her new pals and girlfriend, she is Mikael. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self, Laure takes advantage of her new identity, as if the end of the summer would never reveal her unsettling secret.

Writer-director Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story which deftly explores relationships between children and their peers; between children and their parents; and the even more complicated relationship between one’s heart and one’s body.

Tomboy‘s hugely successful US theatrical release has earned the film rave reviews and fans across the country.

Check out today’s Huffington Post for a terrific post by Wolfe CEO and Founder Kathy Wolfe all about the new LGBT genre categories on Hulu.com and YouTube Movies. Kathy and team worked behind the scenes to make this happen and she talks about this in the context of Wolfe’s many years of advocacy work in the video/DVD industry as she celebrates both Hulu and YouTube — as well as GLAAD who worked together with Wolfe on this initiative. Here’s an excerpt — but please click thru to read the whole piece on HuffPo, it is really worth it.

It was 20 years ago that B. Ruby Rich coined the term “New Queer Cinema” to describe the early-’90s revolution in gay and lesbian filmmaking (and yes, they were all shot and released on actual film). It’s truly amazing that two decades later audiences have such unprecedented access to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) films via the vast array of new exhibition platforms extending far beyond the traditional movie theater (or as they say in Great Britain, “the cinema”). Today’s New Queer Cinema is a genuine multiplex of digital delivery platforms, traditional broadcast, satellite and cable on-demand channels, DVD, Blu-ray, and more. Want your movies downloadable, streaming, HD, mobile? You name it (just get them from legitimate legal sources, please — don’t get me started on the scourge of online movie piracy).

Given my 26 years of work as founder and CEO of Wolfe, the top exclusive distributor of LGBT movies in the world, I’m thrilled to announce that we’re taking things yet one step further to help LGBT audiences gain better access to all these wonderful and vitally important films.

For the past several months Wolfe has been working behind the scenes on an initiative to secure an “LGBT” category heading as part of all digital distribution platforms. This undertaking is just the latest highlight in Wolfe’s ongoing mission to facilitate the broadest possible access to our rich cinematic heritage. This month we’re thrilled to have achieved not just one but two success stories. I personally want to thank the folks at Hulu.com and YouTube Movies for their vision and leadership in launching new LGBT category headings on their platforms, to help LGBT viewers find the films they need to see.

You can browse these categories at the following links:

Hulu Gay and Lesbian

YouTube Movies LGBT

Take a look and you’ll see how exciting it really is.

Be sure to follow Wolfe on Twitter and Facebook for all the latest updates.

All of us at Wolfe are extremely proud to have been part of this initiative — enjoy this informative blog post from GLAAD featuring complete details:

Internet video giant Hulu will launch a new LGBT category heading on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus, GLAAD and Wolfe Video announced today. The new category heading arises out of an initiative spearheaded by LGBT film distributor Wolfe Video, and will help users locate LGBT content more efficiently, including nearly 100 films.

“Wolfe has been working with content providers and retailers for more than twenty years on this simple but important distinction. Creating a visible category for gay and lesbian films continues to be a vitally important reflection of LGBT equality in our culture,” said Wolfe VP, Linda Voutour. "We’re extremely grateful to our colleagues at Hulu for taking such leadership in the digital delivery space.”

“Making such groundbreaking and popular LGBT films available and accessible to a wider audience can have a tremendous impact on LGBT people longing to see relatable stories onscreen,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “We applaud Hulu and Wolfe for their leadership in bringing stories that can touch, inspire and entertain so many.”

DVD Wolfe Price: $19.95 Now Shipping!

Synopsis:

A powerful coming out movie, KAWA is a gorgeously cinematic drama that tells a transcendent tale of bravery, love, family and pride. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel Nights in the Gardens of Spain by Witi Ihimaera (the writer of The Whale Rider), this deeply moving New Zealand drama has earned critical and popular acclaim on the LGBT film festival circuit and beyond. When successful businessman Kawa (the ruggedly handsome Calvin Tuteao) finds the courage to tell his wife and kids, his parents and his traditional Maori community that he’s gay the struggle he endures is not an easy one.

KAWA is a psychological drama of a family in crisis as Kawa, a successful Māori businessman in Auckland, New Zealand, is forced to reveal his lifelong secret that he is gay.

Kawa is the man who has everything. He’s a corporate high-flyer, being groomed to take over his prominent family’s company, properties and legacy. He and his beautiful wife Annabelle have two children –16-year-old Sebastian (Pana Hema-Taylor) and 7-year-old Miranda (Miriama Jane Devantier) – who he loves deeply. They live in an elegant house and all appears perfect in their world.

But Kawa has a secret. He is gay. He always has been. And he’s never shared his secret life with his wife or his family.

Kawa was brought up by his parents – Hamiora (George Henare) and Grace (Vicky Haughton) – and his whānau (‘family’) with a strong sense of duty, is a man of special gifts who is expected to lead his community, and moves easily within both Māori and Pākehā worlds.

Until recently Kawa has led a perfected double-life, but now his father Hamiora is retiring and ready to hand him the mantle of leadership. At the same time, his lover Chris is pushing for more recognition in Kawa’s life, no longer happy with keeping their relationship a secret.

As the film opens, Kawa has moved out of the family home. His wife is desperate to understand why – she knows the marriage is in trouble – and she wants to do whatever it takes to make things right. But Kawa is unable to talk about it. He hopes, instead, that he can continue to keep his life in separate compartments.

But when his lover arrives at the whānau celebration of his father’s birthday celebration, pressures intensify and Kawa realises that his life must change. And that many people will be hurt, including himself.

Welcome to The Guest House, and welcome to this year’s guiltiest pleasure for lesbian movie lovers everywhere!

Blue-eyed blond bad girl Rachel (gorgeous new lesbian heart-throb Ruth Reynolds) is mature for her eighteen years. An aspiring songwriter, she’s given up on her music after the recent death of her mother — and her neglectful father isn’t around very much.

The arrival of Dad’s new employee Amy (the lovely Madeline Merritt)— staying in their swanky Los Angeles guest house for the weekend — brings Rachel the inspiration she needs. A wholesome college graduate fresh to California from the cornfields of Iowa, Amy happily confesses her dreams and desires to Rachel over the course of the weekend — and the two women gradually fall in love!

“It seems like anything’s possible here.” Amy proclaims as they ramble across the city in Rachel’s Dad’s Hummer. Out and about in Los Angeles the two girls can’t keep their hands off each other. At home in the guest house their activities are even hotter.

DVD Wolfe Price: $19.95 Available: July 03, 2012

Synopsis:

Finally, the lesbian riff on Thelma & Louise we’ve all been waiting for!

“A creative tour-de-force… Joe + Belle manages to say something deep about love and violence while still offering all the gallows humor you could hope for.” —AfterEllen.com

Joe + Belle is an incredibly funny and romantic new lesbian feature boasting a great story, a whimsically dark comic sensibility and stellar performances. Writer-director-star Veronica Kedar shines as Joe — a laid-back dope dealer full of magnetic charisma. Sivan Levy is Belle — a forlorn yet irresistibly sensual crazy girl who attaches herself to Joe and refuses to let go.

The chemistry here is spot-on perfect as the two girls fall madly in love against the backdrop of a wild cross-country getaway — after they accidentally kill a guy! Full of whimsical sensibility and black humor, Joe + Belle is destined to restore your faith in young love.

(Movie is in English, Hebrew and French with English subtitles)

We asked the cast of WHAT HAPPENS NEXT to share their VIP Q Movie Picks. Feel free to add ALL of these to your video store list!

Wendie Malick – Elise
My favorite is THE CHILDREN’S HOUR. How a rumor of homosexuality destroyed the lives of two women… It’s both beautiful and terrifying. I also loved MILK and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

Jon Lindstrom – Paul
I am only answering if they include my complete list, but my all time favorite would be THE CRYING GAME. It has all the elements: great story, character, political intrigue, explosive violence and people that actually care about each other. And Neil Jordan can do no wrong. I think it’s a movie that stands up against any other ever made. My complete list of favorites are: GODS AND MONSTERS, MILK, THE GREEN, TORCH SONG TRILOGY and MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE.

Christopher David Murrah – Andy
It’s not a gay movie necessarily but when I was a kid I loved it and I cling to it as an early sign that I was gay. AUNTIE MAME with Roz Russel is the greatest. What little gay boy doesn’t want to believe that there is some madcap aunt just waiting to broaden his horizons with gin and art and trips to Macy’s? The cast is amazing and practically crying out for drag impersonators and on top of it all the score is gorgeous. If you own it, watch it. If you don’t, order it, and tag on a copy of WHAT HAPPENS NEXT — my second favorite gay film also with a stellar cast.

Short and sweet from Megan Hilty – Ruthie
My favorite is LOVE, VALOUR, COMPASSION!

Ariel Shafir – Brian
I like films by Pedro Almodovar such as BAD EDUCATION and THE SKIN I LIVE IN. I also thought I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS was rather brilliant and funny… Mainly because of the ambiguity – I wouldn’t call these “gay” films or “straight” films. They are films that play upon our ideas of orientation or what we think we know about gay lifestyles and challenge us with stories that are much truer to the complexities of life. So that after seeing these films, it becomes more difficult for an audience to compartmentalize gay issues from human issues and hopefully that translates into the kind of society that can no longer separate gay rights from human rights.

James Duke Mason – Zack
Although there are plenty of great LGBT-themed films, I would have to say that THE TRIP is my favorite. It isn’t a perfect film, but I owe it my entire livelihood, as it was the movie that singlehandedly inspired me to come out. It gave me the courage to be who I am, and it made me realize that if I could have the kind of loving relationship with another man that was portrayed in the movie, then it was absolutely worth it, regardless of the consequences. A truly beautiful film.

Jay Arnold – Director
There are so many I love, but A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD is at the very top of my list. I think Michael Cunningham is simply brilliant. Everything about the film is unconventional. Unconventional love and the changing nature of families. Tender and beautifully acted, I believe this by far Colin Farrell’s best work ever. This film was not well accepted by critics, and yet I find it to be astonishingly touching, honest and authentic. The time line also mirrors my own age, so I very much related to growing up in the late 1960s, 70s and early 1980s. Another favorite film is BIG EDEN, a really sweet, upbeat and beautiful film that’s a must see.

“My favorite LGBT film is probably MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO. Aside from the fact that River Phoenix gets sucked off in the first scene of the film which left much to the imagination and subsequent “spank bank” of a certain teenage boy at the time, I also came to really appreciate the subtle homoerotic aspects of the film coupled with the gritty and unapologetic eye of Gus Van Sant. It kinda makes me wanna quit acting and become a hustler. Is that bad? BEAUTIFUL THING is a close second.”

Enjoy Matthew’s acting talents in the exciting Wolfe release, PORNOGRAPHY: A THRILLER. You can also see him in his most recent film, I WANT TO GET MARRIED, as well as: ROLE/PLAY, REDWOODS, SOCKET, GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN and BACK SOON).
