While the LGBT community has long had to struggle with stereotyping by outsiders, gay men also have to deal with widely held perceptions from their peers that they’re supposed to fit a certain image — men who are stylish, carefully groomed, trim and to a certain degree effeminate. But not all gay men fit this profile, and this has led in part to the rise of “Bears” — gay men who are stocky, hirsute, outwardly masculine and proud of it.

As gay culture has moved closer to the mainstream, Bears have come out of the closet (or the woods) and become one of the more visible and active subcultures within the LGBT community. Filmmaker Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Drawing Flies), a self-identified Bear, offers a look at the lives of big guys who love other big guys in the documentary!Bear Nation, which includes interviews with musician Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) and filmmaker Kevin Smith (the latter has become a Bear icon despite being married and straight).

Want your movies downloadable, streaming, HD, mobile? You name it (just get them from legitimate legal sources, please — don’t get me started on the scourge of online movie piracy).

Internet video giant Hulu will launch a new LGBT category heading on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus, GLAAD and Wolfe Video announced today. The new category heading arises out of an initiative spearheaded by LGBT film distributor Wolfe Video, and will help users locate LGBT content more efficiently, including nearly 100 films.

“Wolfe has been working with content providers and retailers for more than twenty years on this simple but important distinction. Creating a visible category for gay and lesbian films continues to be a vitally important reflection of LGBT equality in our culture,” said Wolfe VP, Linda Voutour. "We’re extremely grateful to our colleagues at Hulu for taking such leadership in the digital delivery space.”

“Making such groundbreaking and popular LGBT films available and accessible to a wider audience can have a tremendous impact on LGBT people longing to see relatable stories onscreen,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “We applaud Hulu and Wolfe for their leadership in bringing stories that can touch, inspire and entertain so many.”

A powerful coming out movie, KAWA is a gorgeously cinematic drama that tells a transcendent tale of bravery, love, family and pride. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel Nights in the Gardens of Spain by Witi Ihimaera (the writer of The Whale Rider), this deeply moving New Zealand drama has earned critical and popular acclaim on the LGBT film festival circuit and beyond. When successful businessman Kawa (the ruggedly handsome Calvin Tuteao) finds the courage to tell his wife and kids, his parents and his traditional Maori community that he’s gay the struggle he endures is not an easy one.

KAWA is a psychological drama of a family in crisis as Kawa, a successful Māori businessman in Auckland, New Zealand, is forced to reveal his lifelong secret that he is gay.

Kawa is the man who has everything. He’s a corporate high-flyer, being groomed to take over his prominent family’s company, properties and legacy. He and his beautiful wife Annabelle have two children –16-year-old Sebastian (Pana Hema-Taylor) and 7-year-old Miranda (Miriama Jane Devantier) – who he loves deeply. They live in an elegant house and all appears perfect in their world.

But Kawa has a secret. He is gay. He always has been. And he’s never shared his secret life with his wife or his family.

Kawa was brought up by his parents – Hamiora (George Henare) and Grace (Vicky Haughton) – and his whānau (‘family’) with a strong sense of duty, is a man of special gifts who is expected to lead his community, and moves easily within both Māori and Pākehā worlds.

Until recently Kawa has led a perfected double-life, but now his father Hamiora is retiring and ready to hand him the mantle of leadership. At the same time, his lover Chris is pushing for more recognition in Kawa’s life, no longer happy with keeping their relationship a secret.

As the film opens, Kawa has moved out of the family home. His wife is desperate to understand why – she knows the marriage is in trouble – and she wants to do whatever it takes to make things right. But Kawa is unable to talk about it. He hopes, instead, that he can continue to keep his life in separate compartments.

But when his lover arrives at the whānau celebration of his father’s birthday celebration, pressures intensify and Kawa realises that his life must change. And that many people will be hurt, including himself.

A dark Israeli comedy about two girls who fall in love with each other and their country en route from Tel Aviv to Sderot.

Wendie Malick – Elise
My favorite is THE CHILDREN’S HOUR. How a rumor of homosexuality destroyed the lives of two women… It’s both beautiful and terrifying. I also loved MILK and BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

Jon Lindstrom – Paul
I am only answering if they include my complete list, but my all time favorite would be THE CRYING GAME. It has all the elements: great story, character, political intrigue, explosive violence and people that actually care about each other. And Neil Jordan can do no wrong. I think it’s a movie that stands up against any other ever made. My complete list of favorites are: GODS AND MONSTERS, MILK, THE GREEN, TORCH SONG TRILOGY and MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE.

Christopher David Murrah – Andy
It’s not a gay movie necessarily but when I was a kid I loved it and I cling to it as an early sign that I was gay. AUNTIE MAME with Roz Russel is the greatest. What little gay boy doesn’t want to believe that there is some madcap aunt just waiting to broaden his horizons with gin and art and trips to Macy’s? The cast is amazing and practically crying out for drag impersonators and on top of it all the score is gorgeous. If you own it, watch it. If you don’t, order it, and tag on a copy of WHAT HAPPENS NEXT — my second favorite gay film also with a stellar cast.

I like films by Pedro Almodovar such as BAD EDUCATION and THE SKIN I LIVE IN. I also thought I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS was rather brilliant and funny… Mainly because of the ambiguity – I wouldn’t call these “gay” films or “straight” films. They are films that play upon our ideas of orientation or what we think we know about gay lifestyles and challenge us with stories that are much truer to the complexities of life. So that after seeing these films, it becomes more difficult for an audience to compartmentalize gay issues from human issues and hopefully that translates into the kind of society that can no longer separate gay rights from human rights.

James Duke Mason – Zack
Although there are plenty of great LGBT-themed films, I would have to say that THE TRIP is my favorite. It isn’t a perfect film, but I owe it my entire livelihood, as it was the movie that singlehandedly inspired me to come out. It gave me the courage to be who I am, and it made me realize that if I could have the kind of loving relationship with another man that was portrayed in the movie, then it was absolutely worth it, regardless of the consequences. A truly beautiful film.

Jay Arnold – Director
There are so many I love, but A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD is at the very top of my list. I think Michael Cunningham is simply brilliant. Everything about the film is unconventional. Unconventional love and the changing nature of families. Tender and beautifully acted, I believe this by far Colin Farrell’s best work ever. This film was not well accepted by critics, and yet I find it to be astonishingly touching, honest and authentic. The time line also mirrors my own age, so I very much related to growing up in the late 1960s, 70s and early 1980s. Another favorite film is BIG EDEN, a really sweet, upbeat and beautiful film that’s a must see.
