“I love THE HUNGER, especially, of course, the love scene with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. When asked what it was like to kiss a woman, Susan Sarandon said: “Well, it was Catherine Deneuve.” I also loved the understated sexual tension in ENTRE NOUS, also made in 1983. Directed by Diane Kurys, ENTRE NOUS is about a post World War II love affair between two 1950s married French women (Miou-Miou, Isabelle Huppert). I think one of the most beautiful shots in film is that of Miou-Miou as she looks down at her prewar lover, a young (yes, male) art student. The plot unfolds at the end of World War II and eventually winds until finally the women can sink into the company and love of one another, without the interference of men. In some ways the scene where the one arm of one woman falls across the other’s is more sensual and explosive than the most explicit scene.”

Best known for her long tenure as Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Elizabeth Birch is now President of True Child, the leading national organization helping all children – boys and girls – break through stereotypes so they can be true to themselves and reach their full potential.
