VIP Fave Q Movie Pick
Where we ask today’s hottest queer and queer-friendly filmmakers, stars and community leaders to answer the question:
“One of my favorite LGBT movies is...”
Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc, Boy Culture)
“I’ve never been good at picking favorites. I’m thinking that TODAY, my favorite queer-themed film is 20 CENTIMETERS. There is something so beautiful about the way that story is told, with the dreamy musical numbers and all the fantastically flawed characters. It’s romantic and funny and fabulous and sad and just wonderfully constructed. Now, when it comes to something like WILD REEDS, the scenes between the two boys and the girl are so nostalgic—that film so honestly captures the budding sexuality of young adulthood, with all the confusion and fear and heartbreak. But then there are films like MA VIE EN ROSE or BILLY ELLIOT (which isn’t even really queer), which are so moving to me in the way that they examine the necessary strength that we—as outsiders—derive from our parents’ unconditional love. Those two films really reinforce how important it is for all children (and eventually all adults) to feel loved and supported. And to me, reminding the world of the importance of LOVE is what queer films are all about.”
