“I love The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert because it is a celebration of a world, a reality, a land and a circle of friends that is so foreign yet at the same time so relateable. At the end of that film all I wanted to do was get on that bus with those crazy characters and go wherever they were going. It is funny that years after seeing it, I myself ventured down to Australia and made my own Australian film, NEWCASTLE – so no doubt the film had a huge impact on me. My boyfriend is from OZ and his mom lives in Broken Hill, the Outback town the characters visit and walk down the main street in drag – so every time we visit Broken Hill I always pop my head into the pub where Terrance Stamp had his drink out with the tough broad. And PRISCILLA is a movie about gay characters but I wouldn’t limit it to being just a gay film – the film proved to be hugely popular to a mass audience all over the world because it had a bigger sense of itself and ultimately it is a film about integration and not just being in our own world so I think that is a very positive and necessary message to keep sending out to the world through film and what I explored with NEWCASTLE as well.”
