Constance McMillen Meets Kathy Wolfe at “Lesbian Prom”
This year’s National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Anniversary dinner (aka “the lesbian prom”) took over San Francisco’s Marriot Hotel ballroom on Saturday May 1st with an inspiring program of honorees and more than 1300 NCLR supporters in attendance. The evening’s guests of honor included Mississippi prom activist Constance McMillen who shared this moment pictured above with Wolfe Founder and CEO Kathy Wolfe. Immediately after being presented with NCLR’s Community Partner Award in celebration of Wolfe’s 25th Anniversary, Kathy Wolfe told McMillen that the company is shipping a library of Wolfe’s most significant LGBT films on down to Mississippi as a thank you gift to Constance for her courage and leadership and to provide further inspiration for her as part of our next generation of activists. Constance’s friend and fellow activist Ceara Sturgis (who was erased from her school yearbook after her request to wear a tux for her yearbook photo) was also on hand and the two received an enormous standing ovation as NCLR executive director Kate Kendall introduced them to the crowd saying, “Let’s show them they’re not in Mississippi right now.”
