“It’s so tempting to treat “Eyes Wide Open” as the preposterous melodrama that it easily could have been, but Tabakman manages to make a well composed, unemphatic, and fleet-footed drama out of the overheated material. A more restrained portrait of unconsummated desire might have been both more authentic and compelling, but a less titillating film would have attracted little attention.”

Out gay director Gus Van Sant’s long-awaited bio-pic of openly gay San Francisco supervisor and visionary gay rights leader Harvey Milk comes to the screen at last starring Sean Penn as Milk, in a riveting performance destined to earn him the Best Actor nomination (and quite possibly the win). James Franco also gives a stellar performance as Milk’s boyfriend Scott Smith (shades of Heath Ledger’s Ennis with his plaid shirts and strong silent affection as he stands by his man as long as he can). Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Dan White may also earn a Supporting Actor nod for his forboding yet humanizing depiction of the man who murdered Milk (and SF Mayor George Moscone). The release of the film coincides with the 30th anniversary of Milk’s assassination (on November 27th, 1978) and serves as apt inspiration for all of us as we soldier on in the good fight against Prop 8 (and myriad other injustices across the country). Opens in limited release November 26th. In wide release December 5th.

Another giant feature film release that is not actually gay, and yet… SPEED RACER is directed by hot Hollywood sibling team, the Wachowski’s (in an ongoing and mostly sensational series of news coverage everyone from Fox News to AfterElton.com has been trying to get the story of whether Larry Wachowski has indeed transitioned to become Lana – stay tuned). In any case, everyone wants to see Emile Hirsch as Speed himself. Emile has already played gay in the indie hit, THE MUDGE BOY, and he’ll earn his full gay icon badge later this year when he plays gay activist and Names Project founder Cleve Jones in Gus Van Sant’s Harvey Milk bio-pic, MILK).

We’re always trying to expand the definition of queer cinema. The new Christina Ricci vehicle, Penelope looks like a prime fresh example of that unique sub-genre of: misfit-movies-with-special-resonance-for-LGBT-audiences. The Witnesses
Director André Téchiné’s (Wild Reeds) fast-paced and compelling story features a wonderful cast and fascinating characters, set in Paris in the mid-1980s, an era of sexual freedom. Recent parents Sarah (Emmanuelle Beart), a novelist, and Mehdi (Sami Bouajila), a vice cop, both sleep with other partners. Enjoying a summer holiday at the seashore, Sarah invites her friend Adrien (Michel Blanc), a middle-aged doctor, who brings his handsome young protégé Manu (Johan Libereau). Surprisingly, Mehdi and Manu begin a passionate affair. But everything changes when a mysterious new disease appears. Opens Friday, February 15th Los Angeles, Seattle, Cambridge, Irvine and Pasadena.
