Auraeus Solito on Banned BOY

Posted on June 3, 2010  | Filed Under LGBT MOVIE NEWS & GOSSIP

The Gay Asian website Fridae spoke with filmmaker Auraeus Solito about his film BOY, which was banned from the 2009 Singapore International Film Festival for “normalising homosexuality.” BOY continues to play at film festivals around the globe and will be released on DVD from Wolfe on July 13, 2010. Describing the circumstances of how and why the film was banned, Solito says:

Boy is my ode to the erotic Filipino genre, especially the 1988 Macho Dancer movie by Lino Brocka. Macho dancers are like male strippers with a very enticing and sensual way of dancing which I find aesthetically beautiful. Each generation in the Philippines has a “macho dancer” film. This is my deconstruction of that genre.

In the film, an unnamed teenager accepts himself, his homosexuality, when he falls in love with a Macho Dancer. He sells his comic books so that he can afford to buy him for one night. Of course, the climax of the film is when the Boy finally consummates his love with the Macho dancer.

It is this lovemaking scene (according to the festival organisers of SIFF) that the censors have disallowed. It is a very gentle and sensual scene. In fact, I have made series of screening tests in Manila and Amsterdam – and they found the scene sensual and beautiful. That is why I was totally surprised that the censors found this scene not fit for public viewing.”

More Love for LOLA (from Toronto Film Scene)

Posted on June 2, 2010  | Filed Under LGBT MOVIE NEWS & GOSSIP

Kelly Stewart at Toronto Film Scene totally has the hots for AND THEN CAME LOLA:

“If the women in San Francisco really look anything like the women do in And Then Came Lola, then I need to book my bus ticket there tomorrow. There isn’t a single woman in this film that is anything less than drop dead gorgeous. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it certainly adds to the light feel of this film and for a comedy, and the film is extremely sexy. It’s a fun comedy that I think straight and LGBT audiences would really enjoy equally.”

Something To Say (2) Loves AND THEN CAME LOLA

Check out this latest rave review for AND THEN CAME LOLA (and order your DVD today):

“It’s been about a year since “And Then Came Lola” was thrust onto scene and what a year it’s been.  As the film made the rounds on the LGBT indie movie circuit, the momentum of interest and excitement kept building steadily after each screening.  Now Lola has recently been released on DVD… and it still shows no evidence of slowing down.  It could be the often used tag line, “sexy, lesbian romp” that got everyone running to the theaters.  Or maybe it was the dynamic duo team of Jill Bennett (as Casey) and Cathy DeBuono (as Danielle) who have become increasingly popular in the last year thanks to their hit web series and vlogs, not to mention their genuine, down to earth personalities.  Of course, it could be the fact that film creators Ellen Seidler and Megan Siler set out to make a movie with a team of out LGBT participants, from actors to those behind the cameras.  In addition to Cathy and Jill, there is Ashleigh Sumner (as Lola) Jessica Graham (as Jen, Lola’s ex), and Jenoa Harlow (as “Speed Freak Girl”).”

Alan Cumming (queer actor/performer extraordinaire)

Alan Cumming

“One of my favorite LGBT movies is DIE MOMMY DIE! First of all, Charles Busch is a genius and I would walk over hot coals to hear anything he has to say. And secondly, this film is such a clever homage to old Hollywood as well as Greek tragedy—and you don’t get better homo combos than that. It’s hilarious and touching and Charles works a costume like nobody else.”

Discover Alan’s wonderful performance in BAM BAM & CELESTE or see him interviewed in FABULOUS! THE STORY OF QUEER CINEMA (both on DVD from Wolfe, of course)! And then go check out his blog at AlanCumming.com where you can attempt to keep up with his tremendously busy schedule and read lengthy, entertaining reflections on his exploits.

Constance McMillen Meets Kathy Wolfe at “Lesbian Prom”

Constance McMillen and Kathy Wolfe

This year’s National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Anniversary dinner (aka “the lesbian prom”) took over San Francisco’s Marriot Hotel ballroom on Saturday May 1st with an inspiring program of honorees and more than 1300 NCLR supporters in attendance. The evening’s guests of honor included Mississippi prom activist Constance McMillen who shared this moment pictured above with Wolfe Founder and CEO Kathy Wolfe. Immediately after being presented with NCLR’s Community Partner Award in celebration of Wolfe’s 25th Anniversary, Kathy Wolfe told McMillen that the company is shipping a library of Wolfe’s most significant LGBT films on down to Mississippi as a thank you gift to Constance for her courage and leadership and to provide further inspiration for her as part of our next generation of activists. Constance’s friend and fellow activist Ceara Sturgis (who was erased from her school yearbook after her request to wear a tux for her yearbook photo) was also on hand and the two received an enormous standing ovation as NCLR executive director Kate Kendall introduced them to the crowd saying, “Let’s show them they’re not in Mississippi right now.”
