We Are All… PRECIOUS
The Sundance Film Festival smash hit dramatic feature PRECIOUS: BASED ON A NOVEL BY SAPPHIRE opens in theaters on November 6th. Brought to the screen by out gay filmmaker Lee Daniels, the film took home three awards at Sundance 2009 including the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award and a special acting prize for star Mo’Nique (also stars Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and the amazing newcomer Gabby Sidibe as Precious). PRECIOUS tells the story of a severely abused young black woman whose life is turned around by her new teacher, who happens to be a lesbian. indieWIRE.com’s Eugene Hernandez was on the scene at Sundance for director Lee Daniels’ acceptance speech which was so fabulous we can’t resist sharing it here: “This is so important to me,” said Daniels, accepting the audience award prize, “Because this is speaking for every minority that’s in Harlem, that’s in Detroit, that’s in Watts, that’s being abused, that can’t read, that’s obese and that we turn our back on. And this is for every gay little boy and girl that’s being tortured. If I can do this shit ya’ll can do this shit. Thank you very much.”

Barbara Grier (Naiad Press)
“When the subject is so near and dear to the heart the answer or answers have to be suspect. My favorite is CLAIRE OF THE MOON. It will always be, but it is for lots of wrong reasons including, but not limited to, the wonderful music. Another I like immensely for better reasons is OUT OF SEASON. I like the sense that the people in the movie are real. I believe they exist. I would not be surprised to run into them on the street.
I cannot help but throw this in. There has never yet been a properly funded lesbian film. I hope there will be before my death. But I know because it is clear if you look at straight films, that women’s issues have no meaning in the world, they just don’t. Now it may/will change, but it is still a long uphill battle. Look at all the lesbian films, a very thin field indeed.”

Mink Stole (EATING OUT, GIRL PLAY)
“The only absolutely, deliberately gay movies I ever see are the ones I’m in, so I have to go with BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER (mother of a lesbian), GIRL PLAY (mother of a lesbian), and EATING OUT 2 (mother of a gay son). If fantasies count, though, the one I’d truly love to see is a Disney/Pixar version of the stories of David Sedaris — sort of like Altman‘s SHORT CUTS only in 3D animation.”
