“My very favorite Lesbian Films are 1) DESERT HEARTS 2) D.E.B.S. 3) THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE. DESERT HEARTS was the first Lesbian Film I saw and I was so embarrassed and blown away by it. It was really sexy and still is! I own it on Beta, VHS, Laser Disc and DVD. D.E.B.S. is one of the funniest films ever! TWO GIRLS IN LOVE shook things up and was super cute.”

“I just saw a movie, AIMEE & JAGUAR, and definitely, it is my favorite lesbian (or lgbt) movie. The cover reads that it is an unforgettable film, based on a true story about love, passion and the triumph of the human spirit. They could not have said it better. The New York Times said, “Gorgeously photographed! Heart-wrenching performances.” I agree. As a Jewish lesbian, to watch a movie based on a true-life story, which took place in Berlin during World War II, was an overwhelming moving experience. P.S. Lillian Faderman gave me the movie as a birthday present!”

Wash Westmoreland (QUINCEANERA, THE FLUFFER)

Wash Westmoreland

“My favorite LGBT film is A TASTE OF HONEY, a “kitchen sink” drama set in Salford, England in the early sixties. It is the story of Jo (Rita Tushingham) a teenage girl who is abandoned by her gloriously wanton mother (Dora Bryant), gets pregnant by a black sailor (Paul Danquah) and shacks up with Geoff (Murray Melvin), a young gay man she meets in a shoe shop. Geoff’s character has no coming-out moment, no self-hatred, or angst over his circumstances; he just moves in with Jo, starts “doing the place up” and thereby forms one of cinema’s very first queer families. Made at a time when homosexuality was illegal in Britain, the film was the vision of a 19 year-old usherette, Shelagh Delaney, who, legend has it, was bored with the irrelevance of the plays in her theater. It was a big influence on QUINCEANERA, which features a pregnant latina and her gay cholo cousin. In both movies, the affectionate central relationship is clothed in antagonism and irreverence. ‘What do you do?’ Jo asks Geoff with blunt curiosity, ‘Go on tell! I’ve always wanted to know…’ And this was in 1961!”

Tanner Cohen Meets Beverly Leslie

Leslie Jordan and Tanner Cohen

WERE THE WORLD MINE star Tanner Cohen was on hand for last month’s RSVP Vacations Cruise to Alaska where he presented two screenings of his smash hit movie to hundreds of very happy gay cruise-goers. Also on board was Emmy Award winning comedian Leslie Jordan (Yes, the wonderful Beverly Leslie from Will & Grace). After seeing this snapshot of himself with the extraordinarily tall Mr. Cohen, the diminutive and always hilarious Mr. Jordan was heard to quip: “Oh my goodness, I would have to go UP on him!”

“My pick is MY SUMMER OF LOVE. What I like about it is that the relationship between these two girls is so twisted, and though disturbing, represents something we can all relate to: how utterly psychotic young lesbian love can be.”

Check out the acting and writing talents of Guinevere Turner in the lesbian indie classic, GO FISH or enjoy the darkly clever LATE (her most recent short film as writer-director) which is part of the SHE LIKES GIRLS 3 lesbian shorts DVD.

Robin Greenspan & Lacie Harmon (GIRL PLAY)

Lacie: “There are many I like, but maybe the one I continue to like the most is the first one I saw: PERSONAL BEST. Because, in addition to being hot as hell, the lesbian story is only one aspect. The other major story is these Olympic athletes and their efforts to achieve. So, it slyly creates the feeling that lesbianism is just natural, since it’s not even the main focus.”

Robin: “I’d have to say one of my favorite lesbian films is the Swedish film, SHOW ME LOVE. Yeah, I know, you have to read the subtitles, but it’s well worth it. The movie so accurately depicts the emotions of first love with all it’s angst, fear, longing and joy. This is a truly beautiful, heartfelt film that I highly recommend.”

Katastrophe

“My favorite documentary would be SCREAMING QUEENS by Susan Stryker. This is such an important film. It documents the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot that was pre-Stonewall. It is a major event in Queer, specifically Trans, history that I would have never learned about if not for this movie. Another less serious favorite is TIMES SQUARE. It is such a beautiful love story.”
