“Hmmmm, well it had to be… EMMANUELLE. Okay, it was not a LGBT movie, and it was a really bad cheezy French soft porn movie, but it was the first time ever that I saw two girls kissing and… more. I remember the first time going into a lesbian bar in Denver. Somehow, in my mind, I was thinking that the gals playing pool would resemble the French school girls in the movie. I was wrong. I also have a thing for DESERT HEARTS. Oh, and I loved AIMEE & JAGUAR. WW2 and Lesbians are two of my favorite subjects for the movies.”

“My favorite LGBT film is THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT followed by ANYTHING by Derek Jarman. THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT was the first gay themed movie I ever saw, John Hurt plays Quentin Crisp the effeminate homosexual who bravely confronts British post war straight and gay society by being utterly true to himself.”

from TheAdvocate.com:

More than 700 posters for the South African Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which show illustrated same-sex couples kissing, have been torn down from lamp posts around Cape Town.

“Some stupid twits with more time on their hands than brains trashed our gorgeous posters. And for what?” said festival director Nodi Murphy, according to The Cape Times.

“Well, one of my favorite queer movies is DANI AND ALICE, and not because I’m in it. I think I tend to just go for the dramatic stuff and that hits home to me. The other is one that I wrote myself that isn’t out yet. HaHa! And would you consider STRANGER INSIDE a queer movie? I don’t know. I think it’s a great film though.”

See Yolonda in Roberta Munroe’s powerful short drama, DANI AND ALICE on THE ULTIMATE LESBIAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL DVD at WolfeVideo.com and discover her amazing performance in Cheryl Dunye’s hard-hitting women’s prison drama, STRANGER INSIDE.

“Hmmm… IMAGINE ME & YOU because I loved the traffic scene at the end. I fantasize about someone chasing me down and swearing they can’t live without me. Also BOUND because I love both Gina Gershon (who is incredibly incredible) and Joey Pantoliano. Platonically I mean. Joey that is.”

Jean Genet’s UN CHANT D’AMOUR has got to be my all time fave. Genet’s only film was shocking for it’s time and almost universally banned as obscene pornography. It still holds its power and is incredibly relevant today. It’s an erotic story of two prisoners and their guard who play out themes of submission and domination, which challenge ideas of confinement and freedom. It’ about cruelty, violence, defiance, love, liberation; the possibilities of transformation, lyricism, and desire under the most brutal, institutional authority–all told in 25 minutes. Also, when I first saw it, I fancied one of the prisoners was South Asian, which was the first queer point of racial identification on film for me, albeit a mistaken one–the actor was probably Algerian. But it made me love Genet even more.”

“One of my favorite LGBT films is a lesbian film written and directed by a straight man: LIANNA by John Sayles (restored by UCLA Film and Television Archive). The stark realism of domestic life, the early ’80s drab academic East Coast setting, and the depiction of a lesbian bar even scarier than in real life might be too dated and disturbing for some viewers, but this is a film I never grow tired of watching. It’s a great middle-age coming out story that demonstrates the power of good filmmaking and a specific story told well. I hate to dance, but I love dance scenes in movies and the “Women of the World” sequence is one of my favorites. It’s absolutely hilarious (perhaps not intentionally) and hands down, the best part of the movie to watch with friends. Why is it that straight men have made some of the best lesbian movies? (To be fair, I would have picked Angelina Maccarone‘s ALLES WIRD GUT (EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE) if it were available on DVD).”

“My favorite LGBT film is PRICK UP YOUR EARS–the story of the tumultuous relationship between acerbic British playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) and his lover Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina). I was in high school when the film was released, dealing with my own sexuality and how to hide it. It blew me away to see a film treat homosexuality so matter of factly. Orton prowled the streets for sex in 1960s England, a time when homosexuality was a crime, while Halliwell stayed at home in self-imposed domestic exile. In one scene, they go out prowling together, with Orton “sharing” one of his catches with Kenneth. They engage in a three-way kiss in that scene that I still find incredibly erotic. Halliwell ended up bludgeoning Orton to death and subsequently killed himself with an overdose of pills. It’s a bleak ending to a pretty bleak story, but director Stephen Frears finds the beauty in the grime and the humor in the pain. And watching Gary Oldman transform from a slam-dancing Sid Vicious to the boy-chasing Joe Orton is truly a thing to behold.”
