“Okay, so off the top of my head, TODAY: My favorite LGBT movie, I think is: ELECTION, I think it has one of the best lesbian plot lines ever. Understated. Funny. Smart. OR… BEAUTIFUL THING – loved that one too, about the high school boy who falls in love with a boy on his soccer team. It was just so Sweet and lovely and funny. OH WAIT I LOVED D.E.B.S. Loved it. Funny funny funny. I think D.E.B.S. is my favorite lesbian movie. Yeah if I think about it too long I’ll come up with a long list, so I’ll keep it at those 3. For today. Ask me tomorrow it’ll be 3 different ones. Though I really did LOVE D.E.B.S.

“One of my favorite LGBT movies is MYSTERIOUS SKIN, which I saw at the Turin Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in glamorous (although, the Italians wouldn’t agree, it’s a town famous for Fiat factories!) Turin, Italy. After dinner with John Waters and other festival attendees, we all tromped over to the theater. I thought it was a John Waters screening, but it turned out to be Gregg Araki’s MYSTERIOUS SKIN. What a beautiful, brilliant movie: it’s almost delicate in its treatment of small-town alternakids from Kansas and their grappling with memories of childhood sexual abuse. Based on a novel by Scott Heim. Great soundtrack too. Run, don’t walk.

“I’ll go with SOME LIKE IT HOT. Surprisingly transgressive and made by one of the best directors of all time, Billy Wilder who co-wrote the screenplay with I.A.L. Diamond. Cinematography by Charles Lang. And what a cast! Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, George Raft, Joe E. Brown! I can watch it over and over. “Security!” It’s why I’m gay!”

As the former head of Frameline: The San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival Michael has been championing queer cinema for decades. He was also a co-producer of the groundbreaking documentary THE CELLULOID CLOSET and is now executive director of the International Documentary Association (IDA).

“Without a doubt, my favorite LGBT movie is TORCH SONG TRILOGY. It’s an oldie, but goodie. The acting was superb and it is a rare movie that combines gut-wrenching humor with profound depth. It was the first LGBT movie I had ever seen that truthfully and sensitively portrayed a gay relationship and the struggles and joys that accompanied it during that era. It is a must-see”

“One of my favorite LGBT films is FOXFIRE, although I really see it more as a coming-of-age movie than an LGBT film. Perhaps that’s why it spoke to me so personally as a teenager growing up in the Midwest, just beginning to discover new and exhilarating aspects of my personality and sexuality. These young actresses (including the breathtaking Jenny Shimizu) portrayed the spectrum of adolescent rage, lust, love, and friendship in a way that was so vibrant, authentic, stylish, and wonderfully queer.? My favorite scene is the one in which Legs (Angelina Jolie) tattoos herself and each of the other girls after they almost burn down their school — not just because they take their clothes off (okay, maybe in part) but because it’s both emotionally pure and intensely erotic.”

“My favorite LGBT movie? One of my favorite movies period (not just in the LGBT category): AIMEE AND JAGUAR. I thought the movie was even better than the book—and how often does that happen? The movie captured so well the insanity and terror of Nazi-Germany in the early War years—life ostensibly going on for Aryans, as usual, in nightclubs and restaurants and on the streets, while some Jews and homosexuals (and homosexual Jews like the lesbian Jaguar) tried to find surreptitious ways to live and love in the belly of the beast. Powerful.”

“My favorite queer flick of all time is BEAUTIFUL THING. It’s the movie that made me feel like being gay was going to be okay, even at a very young age. Jamie is fearless and Ste is, well… inspiring.”

Corey is the former arts and entertainment editor at The Advocate and he continues to freelance and work on his new novel.
