Q Sundance Preview: 575 CASTRO ST.
Most of the LGBT films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (January 15-25 in Park City Utah) won’t be coming to your town for many many months. But there is one you can get a look at right now. Jenni Olson‘s short film, 575 CASTRO ST. was commissioned by FilmInFocus.com in conjunction with the release of Gus Van Sant‘s MILK. 575 CASTRO ST. reveals the play of light and shadow upon the walls of the Castro Camera Store set for MILK. The audio track is an edited version of the audio cassette that Harvey Milk recorded to be played in the event of his assassination.
Watch the movie now at FilmInFocus.com! And read more about it on Jenni’s blog site.
Editor’s note: Jenni is Wolfe’s director of e-commerce and we are very proud to congratulate her on premiering at Sundance.
Q Sundance Preview: LA MISSION
Karina Longworth talks to director Peter Bratt at SpoutBlog.com about the upcoming world premiere of his gay Latino feature, LA MISSION at the Sundance Film Festival:
“The story takes place in an urban Latino community, and centers on a violent patriarch (“Che”) who discovers that his only son (“Jess”) is homosexual. In the San Francisco Neighborhood that bears the film’s name, Che is a reformed bad boy of the street, who at middle age, finds beauty building classic lowrider cars. His son, and the friends he’s had since childhood, are at the center of his world. In many ways, Che personifies the dominant patriarchal culture that surrounds him, and like that culture, is at the threshold of great change. He is faced with a choice: maintain old habits and attitudes, OR adapt, grow and mature.”
New Crossdressing Lady Doctor Movie!
Keep an eye out for this new feature from one of our favorite filmmakers, Marleen Gorris (Antonia’s Line, Mrs. Dalloway)! Here’s the (condensed) description from the production company website:
Heaven and Earth is set in South Africa in 1825. The Africans are on the brink of rebellion and the Boers are being pushed to the interior. The Governor is dealing with political drama. And the whole colony is talking about the brilliant army surgeon, Dr James Miranda Barry. In his early 20′s, Barry already has a reputation as a doctor at the head of his profession, pioneering new treatments and better healthcare. But there is another side to the doctor – he is harbouring a secret that goes to the very core of his identity. Somerset finds himself increasingly drawn to the handsome young man with his quick and incisive mind. This attraction is fought by both men at a time when a homosexual liaison can mean execution, until one night Somerset makes a life-changing discovery – Dr James Miranda Barry is a woman! Nothing can now hold back their passionate love affair, except the threat of discovery. For Barry it will mean an end to her career because women are not allowed to enter the professions, but despite the dangers they cannot keep apart. Finally Somerset and Barry are publicly accused of ‘unnatural practises’. They could save themselves by admitting that their love affair is in fact heterosexual. However, Barry will not risk her career, and Somerset honours her silence and pays the price, returning to England in disgrace. Barry is banished to the remote leper colony at Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) where she attempts to put together her shattered life. Then, word comes from Somerset that he wants to be reunited. She decides that she will try to find fulfilment with the man she loves, and sets sail for England. Yet, her time with Somerset is cut short by his sudden tragic death. Dr James Miranda Barry puts on her army uniform once more and rejoins the military. It is only on her death in 1865 that the famous doctor is revealed to be a woman.
Natacha McElhone stars as Barry, alongside James Purefoy (who played Mark Antony in the Rome TV series).
I Love You, Phillip Morris (Trailer of the Week)
Variety describes this much-anticipated Sundance premiering movie as: “From the Bad Santa writers, pic stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as gay prison lovers. What an easy pitch that is.”
Of course we’re dying to see it (no official release date yet but stay tuned). The trailer appears at first to be trotting out a bunch of old tired cliches and dumb jokes. But then seems to head into serious territory — hard to know what to expect. Hopefully the fact that it is premiering at Sundance is a good omen.

Victoria Abril stars as Ana, a present-day lawyer in Madrid researching a mysterious painting by a Franco-era surrealist named Oscar Dominguez (Joaquim de Aleida) when she falls for Eva (Emma Suarez).
