“Picking a favorite queer film ain’t easy – there are some great ones out there. I love MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE, MAURICE, EDGE OF SEVENTEEN. But if you’re going to make me choose one – I’ll have to pick Derek Jarman’s EDWARD II. It’s sexy, startling, heart-breaking. The acting is defiant (try to forget Tilda Swinton as the Queen) and defining. The poetry is gorgeous. The deconstruction is genius (it has Annie Lennox singing “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” for god’s sake). I discovered it at a perfect moment in my artistic development – it was so brave, so potent, so unbridled – it blew my mind. It profoundly affected my taste in art and my belief in the power of cinema to change the world.”

“My favorite LGBT movie is Tipping the Velvet. I recently rented it, and it is a 3-part BBC mini-series. I just loved the bawdy, fast-paced, always adventuresome tone of the movie. It was like a lesbian version of Moll Flanders and follows a young girl, Nancy, who lives in turn-of-the century England who falls in love with a female performer who does male-impersonations. The two become a performing duo of “men,” though later Nancy becomes a male prostitute, and later a sex-slave to a rich woman who makes her wear a golden dildo… you get the picture! My first big crush when I was a kid was Diana Rigg of The Avengers, and her daughter Rachael Stirling plays the lead in Tipping the Velvet. So, the truth probably is that my love of this film also has something to do with my twisted, unrequited love for Rigg!”

Gus Van Sant

We at QMovieBlog had a chance to ask Gus Van Sant his favorite gay movie awhile back (for an interview about his 2005 bio-pic of Kurt Cobain, LAST DAYS) and with his new movie MILK now in theaters we just had to post his reply here along with his tip on Kurt Cobain’s fave gay movie!

“It’s really hard to say. I think that Almodóvar is the best serious gay filmmaker who makes movies that are interesting to me. I really like LAW OF DESIRE.”

Gus went on to tell us: “[Kurt Cobain] did this interview with The Advocate once where he was asked his favorite movie. He had just seen NO SKIN OFF MY ASS, by Bruce LaBruce, and he said that was his favorite.”

Discover two of Gus Van Sant’s classic gay movies, MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO and MALA NOCHE on DVD today!
