Barry Sandler (screenwriter, MAKING LOVE)
“After thinking about it, the film I would pick as one of my faves is PRICK UP YOUR EARS (1987), screenplay by Alan Bennett and directed by Stephen Frears. While not exactly a role model for healthy gay unions, the film brilliantly examines the twisted relationship of British playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) and Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina) and the torment they inflicted on each other as well as endured in a society that wouldn’t accept them. It’s a powerful, complex study of power struggles between men in love, and as a writer I was particularly compelled by the full-blooded portrait of Orton, as fiercely embodied by Oldman.”
