“Well, my favorite film is MAHOGANY starring the inimitable Diana Ross as a supermodel turned fashion designer and Anthony Perkins as the impotent fashion photographer who desires her but can’t get it up (hmmm, I wonder why). It’s not a gay movie in an overt way, but with Diana Ross, Tony Perkins, lots of soapy melodrama, amazing fashions (designed by Miss Ross herself!!!) and that song (Do you know where you’re going to…) — this movie is any gay man’s fantasy. Who wouldn’t want to be plucked from obscurity in the ghettos of Chicago to become the toast of the fashion world?
If I have to pick an overtly gay movie favorite, it would be a toss-up between LILIES by Canadian out filmmaker John Greyson — a sumptuous feast of a film, gorgeously shot and avant-garde in the coolest way, MY LIFE IN PINK (Ma Vie En Rose) — the European tale of a kid who wants to be a girl or EDWARD II — another avant-garde, ultra hip reinvention of a theatre classic. Oh, there’s also CHOCOLATE BABIES — out gay black filmmaker Stephen Winters‘ hilarious and poignant renegade comedy about a band of HIV-positive black queens practicing HIV activist terrorism in New York City. A little-known but must-see indie classic!”

John Cameron-Mitchell (HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH)
“I have a few favorite queer movies: HAPPY TOGETHER by Wong-Kar-Wai about fucked-up lovers in Buenos Aires; TAXI ZUM KLO by Frank Ripploh about a German kindergarten teacher who has a penchant for public toilet sex on his off hours (very influential on SHORTBUS); THE KING AND THE CLOWN, a very popular Korean historical epic about two male minstrels who are in love with each other until the murderous King falls in love with one of them. THE HOURS AND TIMES by Chris Munch about John Lennon’s possible gay moment with his manager. The triumvirate of brilliant docs by Rob Epstein and Jeff Friedman: THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, COMMON THREADS, PARAGRAPH 175.”

Here’s filmmaker Dan Ireland with his convincing and informative spotlight on the merits and pleasures of the Douglas Sirk classic, IMITATION OF LIFE which has influenced so many of our great gay filmmakers including Fassbinder, Almodovar and Todd Haynes.
