MILK World Premieres at Castro Theatre

Sean Penn at MILK Premiere

It was a star-studded, politico-packed evening at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre last night for the World Premiere of MILK, Gus Van Sant’s much-anticipated bio-pic of slain gay SF Supervisor Harvey Milk.

In a scene that would have made Harvey Milk proud, the street outside the theater was lined with hundreds of No on Prop 8 activists (placards in hand) who provided a fitting, powerful backdrop to the red carpet scene — with their steady “Vote No on 8″ chants providing the backdrop for all the media coverage outside the event.

The film’s star, Sean Penn (pictured above) invigorated the already boisterous crowd by shaking hands and showing his support for the cause — echoing his portrayal of Milk in the film, the ever-gregarious community leader.

Following the Hollywood-style arrivals, the sell-out crowd was greeted by SF Mayor Gavin Newsom who gave an electrifying introduction proclaiming: “San Francisco doesn’t just tolerate diversity, we celebrate it!”

There was not a dry eye in the house as the lights came up two hours later and the crowd headed off for a festive celebration at City Hall. Fittingly, the very last Thank You of the MILK credits went to local filmmaker Rob Epstein for his Academy Award winning 1983 documentary, The Times of Harvey Milk.

Cherry Grrl Picks 2 New Lesbian Features

Shelter Me [Riparo]

Fresh new lesbian entertainment site Cherry Grrl spotlights a pair of new lesbian features this month.

The Maria de Madeiros flick, SHELTER ME gets a very flatterring 4 cherry review. Here’s an excerpt (click to read the full review):

“There’s something really special about the experience of watching a movie with subtitles. You automatically transform from couch-dwelling TV-watcher to a connoisseur of the arts who has been whisked away to a foreign land. Subtitles also make you pay attention – the laptop has to be put away and the magazines put down…the focus is now on the story unfolding in front of you. In Shelter Me, the story being told was in Italian, and it was anything but a typical lesbian film… Shelter Me was beautifully shot with excellent acting and well developed characters. The relationship between the two women, where there was clearly great love, was handled realistically and honestly in its depiction of how sometimes, no matter how important someone is to you, you can’t stop yourself from doing something that will hurt them.”

And continuing with the joy of subtitled films… the new German lesbian feature, FOUR MINUTES gets a 3.5 cherry review:

“When someone uses the word “original” to describe a movie, they are talking about movies like Four MinutesFour Minutes is a very dark but extremely well made film that can be greatly appreciated for its moving performances, its strong character development, and its powerful depictions of the relationships between women – both romantic and those that are much more complex.”
