Finn’s Girl directors talk to AfterEllen.com
“She didn’t speak English and I didn’t speak French — and we just had our 20th anniversary,” Colbert recalled. They first met in Paris, where Cardona was moonlighting as an attorney and running a feminist cinema club on the side. “It was just interesting that we didn’t start out at all speaking the same language. But we loved films, and I think that’s what started our relationship.”
Canadian lesbian filmmakers Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert (FINN’S GIRL, THANK GOD I’M A LESBIAN) talk to AfterEllen.com about filmmaking, film-loving, their twenty-year relationship and the recent DVD release of their lesbian feature, FINN’S GIRL.
Joseph Lovett (director, GAY SEX IN THE ’70s)
“My favorite LGBT film is SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY which had an enormous impact on me as a young filmmaker. I had always admired Schlesinger for his incredible control and the dynamic, under-the-skin performances he pulled from his actors, but the deftness with which he handled the gay theme (or subtheme) in SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY was truly breathtaking. The “Kiss” between Peter Finch and Murray Head was, at the same time, so matter of fact and so shocking in 1971 that the New York audience that I saw it with actually gasped. It was a revolutionary act by Schlesinger and the actors and was taken as such by the public. In today’s times, it may be difficult for someone to imagine how incredibly brave they were to do it. I remember saying to myself ‘Wow! Thank you, Mr. Schlesinger. We all owe you one.’”
Get your hands on a DVD of Joseph’s excellent documentary, GAY SEX IN THE ‘70s (a must-own addition to your DVD library).
