Lance Bass stars in GLSEN’s new PSA promoting the National Day of Silence — this coming April 25. Students across the country will remain silent today as a way of calling attention to anti-LGBT bullying and harassment. This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old from Oxnard, Calif., who was shot and killed by a classmate this past February 12th because of his sexual orientation and gender expression. The Living End

A postmodern story of l’amour fou propelled by a hardcore-industrial soundtrack, Gregg Araki‘s seminal queer film THE LIVING END explores the sexual and fatally romantic consequences of gay male attraction in the 90s. The film focuses on the dire relationship between a pair of young outcasts – Luke the rootless hustler, and Jon, a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he’s HIV positive. With literally nothing to lose, they set off on the lam into the desolate, quasi-surrealistic American Wasteland.

The Edge of Love

Rumors have been swirling for ages about possible lesbian content in THE EDGE OF LOVE, the forthcoming Dylan Thomas bio-pic from British gay director John Maybury. Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller star — yum! And p.s. Matthew Rhys (“Brothers & Sisters”) co-stars as Dylan Thomas and Cillian Murphy (Breakfast on Pluto) also co-stars.

Read all about it on AfterEllen.com!

This film is not to be confused with the mega-award winning new German drama with a lesbian theme, Fatih Aken‘s THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (opening in US theaters next month). Actually this is just the beginning of the confusion! The URL for the AfterEllen item about THE EDGE OF LOVE refers to: “the-edge-of-heaven.”

“What a dump!” SF Intnl. Film Fest: Now & Then

Last Mistress, The

The 51st edition of the San Francisco International Film Festival opens April 24th (with Catherine Breillat‘s The Last Mistress, starring 21st century diva Asia Argento) and continues through May 8th.

One of the top festivals in the world, the SF International has hosted some of the greatest cinematic luminaries of all time — many of whom can be heard at length in podcasts on the history section of the SFIFF website. Highlights include Truman Capote receiving his tribute award in 1974 and answering audience questions about everything from breaking Humphrey Bogart‘s arm to the real-life Holly Golightly. Or listen to the amazing Bette Davis (who jokingly begins her November, 1969 tribute with her legendary line: “What a dump!”). She reminisces at wildly entertaining length about her career (with the audience full of many obviously gay fans). She talks about her feelings about the trend of nudity in film (“I would NEVER have stripped in front of a camera.”), Barbra Streisand getting $1 million as an actor, how lucky she was that Claudette Colbert’s back injury resulted in her getting the Margo Channing role in All About Eve, how she regretted not getting the lead in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and she even gives generous props to drag artiste Arthur Blake for being the original Bette Davis impersonator (“For many years noone imitated me and it frightened me to death.”)

Malaya Rivera Drew & Kathy Wolfe

Monday, April 7th was a wild night in Tampa at the annual Wolfe Final Four Party (co-presented by Fun Women at Play, Showtime and the National Center for Lesbian Rights). THE GYMNAST star Dreya Weber wowed the crowd with her aerial performance while L Word star Malaya Rivera Drew (pictured above with Wolfe founder & CEO Kathy Wolfe) greeted women and signed autographs throughout the evening. The line started early and women came in all night to fill Tampa’s huge nightclub space, the Underground. It was a great way to party between the basketball games and meet all the out of town women.
